ABOUT THE REGION
Puntarenas & the Gulf Islands covering approximately 1,517 square miles with 264 miles of stunning coastline, the Puntarenas region—along with the Gulf Islands—is one of Costa Rica’s most iconic coastal destinations. Though some boundaries are loosely defined, the region includes parts of the Nicoya Peninsula and the city of Puntarenas, with both areas connected by convenient maritime transport. The coastal stretch extends from Punta Conejo in the south to Puerto Caldera, near the mouth of the Bongo River.
